Working Animal Welfare Project
Culturally the animals are treated as much inferior to humans in respect of their worth and welfare, it is more prominent amongst the working animals as they are supposed work and support the livelihood system of humans. The working animals are vulnerable to various fatal diseases due to poverty, lack of vet services, lack of awareness and ignorance among the owners/farmers in rural areas. Among the poorest families in Odisha, working animals such as bullocks, buffaloes, horses etc play a crucial role in their lives and livelihoods. These poor people are heavily reliant on their working animals for agriculture works and goods transportation etc. Despite being the economic backbone of these poor people, these hardworking animals suffer from pain, poor health conditions, malnutrition, dehydration, working in extreme temperatures, poor harnessing, and no veterinary care when sick or injured. The poor conditions they suffer from are compounded by disease outbreaks such as Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), FMD, HS, BQ, etc. These diseases cause immense suffering and often lead to the death of some animals, further impoverishing the families that depend on them. Addressing these issues requires multi-pronged approach such as improved veterinary services, preventive vaccinations. Create awareness, and better animal care practices. Apart from that, the negative impact of climate change and global warming on working animals and their owners will continue to rise in the years ahead. Our project areas- Odisha state is considering one of the world’s most vulnerable and worst climate hotspot and regularly experiences cyclones, floods, storms surges, extremely heat wave and temperature rising leads to great challenges. As a result of the warmer climate, many diseases will be easier to spread. Increasingly, poor families and small-scale farmers are facing extreme weather events, which will make it difficult for them to recover from failed agricultural production and other crises and be unable to care for their animals properly. Therefore, our project focus has been on ensuring the treatment of working animals in distress, while addressing long term animal health status and welfare through the training of owners in animal care, welfare, humane handling of animals, drinking water etc. The proposed project will enhance the understanding and sensitivities of the animal owners/handlers and the larger community and their response in improving five domains of animal welfare, quality of life; worth of working animals in the community; animals in relation with overall ecosystems and human life. Our mission is to reach out the community for bringing a sort of cultural transformation in dealing with animals in general and working animals in particular. Every month our team reached 100 animals through our services. Our services include routine checkups, vaccinations, and treatments for common ailments and injuries. In addition, we educate animal owners about proper care and nutrition to increase the longevity and effectiveness of their animals. This education helps owners understand how to prevent common health issues, improve the animals' quality of life. This holistic approach ensures that working animals can continue to support their communities while living healthier, more comfortable lives. Sincerely thanks to Animal Aid Abroad Inc.
